Daily Snap: Carb-Free Diet Cures Epilepsy
- Published May 7, 2008
Moms, do your kids have epilepsy? Stop forcing your kids to eat vegetables and start forcing them to eat fat right now! Carbs, the arch nemesis of good health, might be triggering your kid’s seizures.
Kids with a history of epilepsy, were put on a high-fat, low carb diet in London. The diet was found to reduce seizures for kids whose epilepsy was not responding to medication.
According to the New York Times:
“Though its exact mechanism is uncertain, the diet appears to work by throwing the body into ketosis, forcing it to burn fat rather than sugar for energy. Breakfast on the diet might consist of bacon, eggs with cheese, and a cup of heavy cream diluted with water; some children drink oil to obtain the fats that they need. Every gram of food is weighed, and carbohydrates are almost entirely restricted. Breaking the diet with so much as a few cookies can cause seizures to flare up.”
In some test groups, children’s seizures were reduced by half and others were reduced by 90%. While I’m not thrilled that kids with epilepsy are on a modified Atkins diet, some of these kids were previously experiencing as many as one hundred seizures a day, and haven’t had a seizure since they’ve started the diet. If that’s not advancement, I don’t know what is.
