In an unusual move this weekend, citizens of Chengdu, China protested the construction of a petrochemical factory and oil refinery set to be built by the Sichuan provincial government and PetroChina. The protestors believe both projects pose serious environmental and health related risks.
Even with severe government-sanctioned limits on communication, the protestors were able to communicate via cell phone texts and certain blogs, making grass root operations possible.
The 400 to 500 protestors subverted a law that requires a permit to march by stating that they were only out for a “stroll.”
