Cosmos are under-rated. For those of you who don't know, Cosmos are a combination of vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and fresh lime, giving this girly cocktail the bite of a much stronger drink. As with any cocktail, a good cocktail is hard to find, so I decided to make my way through Manhattan until I found the perfect one.
I first went to 230 Fifth Bar. It's decorated in 1950's art deco, complete with purple plush couches, a pink-mirrored ceiling, and Sinatra crooning from the speakers. My Cosmo was delivered to me in a large plastic martini glass, with more alcohol than juice, and shaken to a perfect froth.
Next, was Coffee Shop. As usual, it was bustling, so we made our way to the back bar, and sat by the windows for our second Cosmo of the evening. It was much smaller than 230 Fifth's, not as strong, and tasted incredibly similar to vodka cranberry water, without a hint of triple sec or lime.
Last up was Stanton Social. Their upstairs lounge and bar is the ultimate in modern comfort, and so are their drinks. They feature a delicious take on the traditional Cosmopolitan: house infused vanilla and cucumber vodka with white cranberry juice. Garnished with a slice of fresh cucumber, it's at once strong and subtle, yet sure to be loved by the most faithful of Cosmo fans.
In a city where it's hard to find apartments, jobs or dates, it's nice to know that with a little bit of effort, you can find a good Cosmo.
